Wireless networks are rapidly evolving into heterogeneous networks that can accommodate various scales and types of base stations. In addition to macrocells, these networks can currently employ microcells, urban cells, picocells, and even femtocells. These different types of base stations must meet diverse requirements. For macro units and Cloud-RAN architectures, baseband and backhaul processing are separated from radio frequency processing using CPRI/OBSAI over fiber. Small cells have a higher level of integration, with backhaul, baseband, and radio frequency processing typically centralized on a single platform. Based on throughput, serial bandwidth, power consumption levels, and user numbers, the requirements for small cells vary greatly; in some cases, they can be implemented on a single device.
